Definition of Safety Shoes
Safety shoes are one of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that must be used by workers in dangerous work environments. Safety shoes function to protect the feet from work incidents or accidents. Its use can minimize risks or work accidents such as cracked feet due to being hit by hard objects, feet being punctured by sharp objects, chemical liquids, slipping in the work area, and burns. With many potential risks, safety shoes are a part of K3/HSE that workers must use in the workplace.
Safety shoes have different features according to their use. Generally, safety shoes have the following features: Water Resistant Upper (WRU), heel energy absorption, waterproof shoes, Electrical Hazard (EH), Anti-static shoes, and composite or steel toe cap.
Function of Safety Shoes
Some of the functions of safety shoes as K3/HSE PPE are as follows:
- Protects from punctures
The main function of safety shoes is to protect against sharp object punctures. This function distinguishes safety shoes from regular work shoes. If the midsole is equipped with a steel plate (steel midsole), the shoe can withstand sharp objects.
- Protects from falling objects
Safety shoes protect the feet from falling objects/materials in the workplace. The risk of objects falling in the work area is significant, whether due to human error or other factors. Without the protection of safety shoes, being struck by a heavy object can result in serious injuries such as bone fractures.
- Slip resistance
Safety shoes prevent potential slipping in the workplace. The quality of safety shoes can be assessed by their grip on slippery surfaces
- Protecting against static electricity
Static electricity is hazardous in areas prone to fire or explosion. Safety shoes can dissipate static electricity, making them advantageous as K3/HSE PPE.
- Protects from chemical spills
Safety shoes also protect against dangerous chemicals that could injure the feet. Workers wearing safety shoes need not worry while working in areas with hazardous chemicals.
- Heat resistance
Another advantage of safety shoes is their resistance to high temperatures. Heat-resistant safety shoes are typically used by firefighters due to their ability to withstand fire.
- Water resistance
Another function of safety shoes is their ability to repel water in workplaces with standing water or muddy conditions
