Definition of Furnace
A furnace is a device or instrument designed to generate heat. It can be called a kiln or smelter. Its purpose is to heat materials through combustion. A furnace operates by utilizing thermal energy, heating the objects inside. Furnaces are commonly used in the mining industry to heat ore or other mining materials.
The functions of a furnace vary depending on its type, but generally, it is used for direct heating of materials. Furnaces operate at very high temperatures, allowing for rapid heating of the material’s surface. The device works by raising the temperature of the fluid resulting from combustion. Fuel used to heat the furnace is typically gas ignited in a burner. Some furnaces are equipped with time controls to automatically adjust the temperature. The interior walls of a furnace are designed to withstand high temperatures, using materials like alumina, with temperatures reaching up to 2000°F – 2450°F.
Definition of Kiln
A kiln is a thermally isolated room. A kiln is a device used in pyro processing to increase the temperature of the temperature of the material to a very high level, with a typical temperature range of 1700° F – 2350° F. The kiln is usually burned from room temperature to a specific process temperature at a prescribed rate of increase and then allowed to cool back to room temperature at a controlled rate. The rate of increase or decrease during the firing and cooling stages is the important thing. The material being burned in the kiln is rarely removed from the working unit. The kiln will produce sufficient temperature to complete processes such as hardening, drying, or chemical changes. The purpose of the kiln is to harden, burn, calcify, and dry something like a melting core. The process of using a kiln is that the item to be burned is put into the kiln, then the kiln is closed and the internal temperature is raised according to schedule, after the combustion is complete the kiln and the item is cooled.
Kilns also operate in the cement industry. The kiln is the main component in cement factories because most chemical reactions take place in them at high temperatures. Cement kilns are used to burn cement clinkers and can be widely used for cement, metallurgical, chemical, and other industries. The energy-intensive operations involved in cement kilns demand efficient control to minimize fuel use and improve cement quality. Kilns are used in the cement industry to calcinate lime and are made in various shapes.
The rotary kiln used in the cement industry does not have a standard operating temperature but the temperature is usually around 1250 and 1450. Rotary kilns are the core of the cement production process. The process in a rotary kiln is that the raw materials that form the basis of cement are mixed into the final milled feed which is continuously fed into the rotary kiln. The raw materials will be adjusted in such a way as to obtain the right balance of chemical elements. These raw materials will experience changes in the kiln due to high temperatures in a dynamic environment. The result of the transformation is cement clinker, this clinker forms the basic block that forms cement.
Differences between Furnace and Kiln
Furnace and kiln are both devices that burn materials at high temperatures like melting ore, but they differ in their operation. Many also refer to the kiln as a type of furnace. Both devices are used for similar purposes but differ in their operation. The kiln is used to harden, burn, calcine, and dry materials like melting ores. The kiln also can operate in the cement industry and is a crucial component in cement production. The furnace is used for heating through material combustion. The furnace works by utilizing thermal energy to heat the object. The furnace is generally used for heating mineral ore or other mining materials. Both devices burn ore at high temperatures.
