Head equipment
One of the most important tools in PPE is head equipment such as a safety helmet. A safety helmet is a form of head protection usually made from metal or other hard materials such as Kevlar, resin fiber , or plastic. Helmets can provide additional protection to part of the head (depending on its structure) from falling or high-speed objects at the field.
The main use of a safety helmet is to protect the heads of workers when carrying out operational activities in a factory or company. The use of a safety helmet in risky work areas is mandatory because its main function is for personal protection, especially for the head. The potential risks originating from overhead are quite large and often occur in factory or company work environments. So the existence of PPE such as helmets for this project is very important.
The color of the helmet turns out to have meaning for specific users based on each company’s regulations. Usually, the colors used to differentiate positions and their users, for example:
- White safety helmets are used by managers, supervisors, engineers, and foremen.
- Yellow safety helmets are usually used by site supervisors, temporary supervisors, subcontractors, general workers, or civilians in the field.
- Red safety helmets are intended for K3 (Occupational Safety and Health) workers. And their function is to ensure or supervise that the safety system is installed and functioning according to standards.
- For workers who are in contact with the environment, especially environmental supervisors in the project area and also cleaners, they wear green safety helmets as a means to convey the message “Go Green”.
- Workers in the mechanical electrical (ME) work unit, operators such as forklifts, bulldozers, and cranes when in the field wear blue safety helmets.
- Company guests who are visiting the Company or in the field usually wear orange safety helmets.
In a safety helmet, the most important parts are the visor and lens. These parts protect the eyes from glass shards, debris, and metal shavings. This visor and lens must be made of shatter-resistant material to avoid injury, especially to the eyes. Usually, the visor is made of polycarbonate, but some models have a glass or shatterproof visor. Visors come in several colors, clear visors are preferred because they allow you to see clearly and can also block harmful UV rays from the sun.
